Researchers have found in the latest review that Lithotripsy improves erectile function in impotence also called Erectile dysfunction. Dr Paul J. Rizk at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX, USA and colleagues conducted a study to investigate the efficacy of lithotripsy (Li-ESWT) for the treatment of Erectile dysfunction. The study has appeared in Journal Sexual Medicine Reviews.

Vasculogenic erectile dysfunction (ED) is one of the leading causes of male sexual dysfunction. In the past, a number of studies have examined the use of low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave therapy (Li-ESWT) for the treatment of ED.

The researchers reviewed the published literature, including randomized controlled trials (RCTs), meta-analyses, and select single-arm studies on the use of Li-ESWT for the treatment of Erectile dysfunction. The outcome was changed in the International Index of Erectile Function scores were evaluated in patients undergoing Li-ESWT.

The authors noted that multiple trials, including randomized controlled trials, have been performed regarding Li-ESWT. Compared with sham procedures, Li-ESWT has resulted in an improvement in erectile function based on the International Index of Erectile Function questionnaire.

They found that this technology may improve erectile function in men with mild erectile dysfunction or in combination with PDE-5 inhibitors for moderate/severe erectile dysfunction. The role of Li-ESWT in the treatment of non-vasculogenic ED remains poorly defined. However, trial inclusion criteria and non-standardized protocols limit the generalizability of the results.

Low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (Li-ESWT) has emerged as a potential noninvasive method to treat vasculogenic erectile dysfunction. These data suggest that Li-ESWT may be beneficial for vasculogenic erectile dysfunction. Identifying the subset of men who will benefit from this treatment should be an initial focus of trials so that Li-ESWT can gain widespread acceptance, authors feel
