Doctors operate on new born baby with GIANT Tongue

Jabalpur: Surgeons at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College and Hospital successfuly operated a new born baby who was born with a giant tongue Tumor.

A new born baby girl, Aparajit Lodhi hailing from Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh) is reported to have been born with a rare congenital anomaly called Macroglossia. The baby was operated after four days of her birth to remove the tongue tumor.

Macroglossia is the medical term for an unusually large tongue. Severe enlargement of the tongue can cause cosmetic and functional difficulties in speaking, eating, swallowing and sleeping. Macroglossia is uncommon, and usually occurs in children.

The case was rare as doctors were not sure about her life, they advised that if she would survive, she might not live very long.

Mini Lodhi, mother of baby told Sun, “I was horrified to see the baby with her own tongue stuffing her month.

“She was crying continuously. I knew she was in pain and also hungry.But I was helpless. I could neither share her pain nor nurse her because the overgrowth had clogged her mouth"

The doctors used the breathing apparatus for kept alive the baby.

Dr Agarwal, head of pediatric and newborn surgery at the state run Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College and Hospital operated the new born told the media, “She was not able to swallow anything because of this giant tongue,"

“After the operation, she was able to swallow anything for the first time ever. It was a big tumour in the tongue and it took two hours for the team of doctors to remove the growth."

“We had to remove the tumour completely as we couldn’t have left any remnants of it. But at the same time, we had to take care that the tongue doesn’t lose its function.”

The parents of the baby relived with the operation, as the operation was successful.
