The didelphys uterus, commonly known as the double uterus is Mullerian Duct Anomaly which is characterized by complete failure of the Mullerian ducts to fuse leading to separate uterine cavities and two cervices. It is a rare congenital abnormality.
Bangladesh: Two deliveries by the same woman in a span of one month!! An extremely rare case of Uterus Didelphys (having two uteri) came into light when Bangladeshi women gave birth to twins after a month of premature delivery.
The case concerned on Arifa Sultana, a 20 years old women who gave birth to a premature baby boy through C-section in the month of February 2019 at Khulna Medical College Hospital, Bangladesh. However, just after 26 days of the delivery she felt pain in her stomach and had to rush to Ad-din Hospital in the Jessore district on 21 March.
What happened after that was a jaw-dropping moment for the doctors who were examining her. After doing an ultrasound the doctor found that she was still pregnant and this time with twins in what appeared to be a second uterus. The twins, a boy, and a girl were successfully delivered through an emergency Caesarean. The babies and the mother were discharged on 25th March.
Speaking to the media, attending gynecologist Dr. Sheila Poddar said "We were very shocked and surprised. I have never observed something like this before"
The didelphys uterus , commonly known as the double uterus is Mullerian duct anomaly which is characterized by complete failure of the Mullerian ducts to fuse leading to separate uterine cavities and two cervices. It is a rare congenital abnormality.
A double uterus is often asymptomatic. The condition may be discovered during a regular pelvic exam or during an ultrasound test to determine the cause of repeated miscarriages. Women with double uterus often experience repeated miscarriages and preterm labor, as seen in the case of Afrin. Women with double uterus experience unusual menstrual problems.
