Successful knee replacement at Jaypee Hospital helps 75-year-old woman to walk again after 5 years

Noida : The team of doctors at Jaypee Hospital have successfully treated a 75 year old woman who was living an unbearable painful life. 75 year old Bilquis, a resident of Muzaffarnagar was completely bed ridden for last five years. The surgery was successfully performed by Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Associate Director, Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement Department, Jaypee Hospital and his team.

Explaining about the disease, Dr. Sanjay Gupta said, “The patient had severe form of Rheumatoid Arthritis. The disease induces pain in the joints, swelling, stiffness and deformity. If the patient does not take treatment on time then the disease becomes so severe that the joints can become completely dysfunctional. This is what has happened to this patient as well. About 20 years ago, the knee joints of the patient started getting affected. Slowly, her knees started getting crooked. Now, they were completely bent to 90 degrees and since last five years she was bed ridden.”

Dr. Sanjay Gupta further added, “Due to the illness, the hip joints of the woman also got affected. The condition was so bad that she had to sleep like a crooked log. She was unable to perform any kind of physical activity and had to spend whole day lying on the bed. The patient had no other option but to depend on bed pan for her daily natural calls. The patient underwent complex joint reconstruction and corrective soft tissue surgery. Four surgeries were performed in two stages which took about 2 hours for each stage. The patient has completely recovered and is able to walk now.”

“We were very worried about our grandmother as her health was deteriorating day by day. She used to have terrible pain in her joints that sometimes she wasn’t even able to sleep for consecutive 2- 3 nights. We had consulted many doctors for this but they were not very sure of the results considering the criticality of the disease and my grandmother’s age. From last five years she was completely bed - ridden and seeing her in that pain was torturing us daily. I am really thankful to god that I came to Jaypee Hospital and met Dr. Sanjay Gupta for her treatment. Today, I am elated to see her walking herself,” said Imdad Ulhaq, Grandson of the patient.
