Miraculous escape: UAE woman wakes up from coma after 27 years
UAE: A woman who sacrificed herself to save her son's life has miraculously woken up from coma after 27 long years. The woman, Munira Abdulla, is from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), had suffered a severe brain injury back in 1991 when the car she was traveling in collided with a bus.
Munira Abdulla, then 32, had just picked up her 4-year-old son Omar from school when the car they were in collided with a school bus. When she saw the crash coming, she hugged him to protect him. He suffered just a bruise to the head but his mother was left untreated for hours.
Ms. Abdulla regained consciousness last year in a hospital in Germany. Omar told in an interview with a UAE-based newspaper that he never gave up on her. He always felt that she would wake up one day.
Ms. Abdulla was taken to a hospital and was later transferred to London. There, she was declared to be in a vegetative state - unresponsive, but able to sense pain.
She was then transferred to Al Ain in the UAE where she moved to various medical facilities based on insurance requirements. She remained there for a few years, and was fed through a tube and kept alive. She was given physiotherapy to ensure that her muscles would not weaken due to lack of movement.
In 2017, the Crown Prince Court offered a grant to the family for Ms Abdulla to be transferred to Germany. There, she underwent several surgeries to correct her severely shortened arm and leg muscles and was given medication to improve her state, including her wakefulness. A year later, her son was involved in an argument in her hospital room, which seemed to cause Ms Abdulla to stir.
Omar mentioned that there was a misunderstanding in the hospital room and she sensed that he was at risk, which caused her a shock. She made strange sounds and he kept calling the doctors to examine her. They said that everything was normal.
Three days later, Omar woke up to the sound of someone calling his name. It was her! She was calling his name.
She became more responsive, and can now feel pain and have some conversation. She has returned to Abu Dhabi and is undergoing physiotherapy and rehabilitation to improve her posture while sitting and prevent her muscles from contracting.
