MCI issues clarification on fixation of MBBS, PG Medical fee at private medical colleges
New Delhi: Responding to the media reports about Medical Council of India (MCI) reducing the fees fixed for private medical colleges, the apex medical regulator has clarified that recommendations on MBBS and PG medical fee are not yet finalised by the council
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported in the light of the fact that the formation of National Medical Commission (NMC) to replace the existing Medical Council of India (MCI) may take some more time, the Union Health Ministry has asked the Board of Governors (BoG) to prepare draft guidelines for the fee structure in private medical colleges and deemed universities from the next academic session.
The same will form the base document, once the National Medical Commission (NMC) replaces the MCI

However, recently many media reports surfaced stating that the recommendations have been finalised and suggested maximum fee for PG Medical courses up to 90% lower than what students pay at present as well as MBBS fee to be capped around Rs 8 lakh per annum. Responding to these media reports , MCI has now issued a clarification that these media reports are not correct. In its clarification, the regulator stated
Attention of all concerned is invited that some media reports suggest that the Board of Governors in Supersession of the Medical Council of India have recommended some "Guidelines for Fee Fixation in Private Medical Colleges" to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. These Media Reports are not correct.
It did, however, confirm that the Ministry has asked MCI to make guidelines for fixation of fees in Private Medical Colleges and that while it has started the work on the same, the recommendations are yet to be finalised
All concerned are hereby informed that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India had requested the Board of Governors in supersession of the Medical Council of India to prepare Guidelines for fixation of fees in Private Medical Colleges. These Guidelines are to facilitate the National Medical Commission to be constituted by the Government of India under the National Medical Commission Act, 2019 in discharge of its responsibilities under the NMC Act, 2019.The Board of Governors have initiated preliminary work for formulation of such Guidelines through collection of data. Details of fee structure of private medical colleges have been received and are being examined. No recommendations has yet been finalised
