Even Personal Assistants of Judges draw more salary than Madras Govt Doctors: Madras HC

Chennai: Taking note of the pittance salary paid by the Tamil Nadu government to its doctors associated with the state government hospitals and medical colleges, the Madras High Court recently pulled up the state government on the doctors' strike.

Taking suo moto cognizance of the strike, division bench of Justice N Kirubakaran and P Velmurugan slammed the state, noting that even PA to judges draw more salaries than government doctors in the state

"Only Rs 57,000 per month to government doctors in Tamil Nadu? Government teachers and personal assistants to judges draw more salary. Those doing divine service should be paid more," stated the bench

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that demanding time-bound promotion for government doctors and teaching faculty in the state, doctors under the aegis of Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association stopped work as well as teaching from 25th October till their demands are met.

Nearly 17,000 government doctors across the state of Tamil Nadu abstained from duties as their Strike till Tamil Nadu Doctors Association for Social Equality had on November 1 temporarily called off the strike.

The doctors are demanding proper implementation of the Dynamic Assured Career Progression (DACP) scheme with pay band-4 at the end of 13 years of service, maintenance of doctors’ posts in accordance with the number of patients, 50% service quota in PG medical admissions and counselling for PG postings.

Implementation of a Government Order that envisages time-bound promotions, apart from ensuring appropriate patient-doctor ratio in hospitals by amending another GO are among the demands. Bringing back the 50 per cent quota for government doctors in postgraduate and super speciality streams is another demand.
