Battling Depression, 3rd year MS General Surgery allegedly commits suicide

Written by Garima Published On 2019-11-18T09:08:15+05:30  |  Updated On 18 Nov 2019 9:08 AM IST

Mumbai: A 28-year-old senior resident doctor of Parel based civic-run KEM Hospital allegedly committed suicide by injecting himself with intravenous drugs. It is being discerned that the doctor allegedly took this step after being depressed over family issues or recent breakup with his girlfriend.

The deceased doctor was a senior resident of general surgery and a third-year MS student. His body was found lying on the terrace of the Resident Medical Officers’ hostel, where he was staying with his, who raised an alarm. The doctor was declared dead before admission at the hospital.

According to the police, on the night of 15th November 2019, he did not return to his room and his colleagues mounted a search. His body was found on the terrace of the hostel the next morning. A syringe used for intravenous injection was found lying near the body, indicating that he could have committed suicide, reports TOI

IV tubes were still found attached to his hand. A bag was found next to him, but no suicide note has been recovered so far.

The reasons for the alleged drastic step are not clear yet. According to the colleagues, the doctor may have been driven to commit suicide after he recently broke up with his girlfriend. However, the roommate informed the police that the doctor was under clinical depression over the last six months due to some domestic issues and was taking ant- depressants. He was known by the locals to be a gold medalist and a good person with credible track records.

An accidental death case has been registered to probe into the incident. The exact cause of death is yet to be ascertained but a preliminary probe has suggested he injected himself with a poisonous substance, police officials informed PTI.

Forensic experts informed The Indian Express that the doctor's body showed signs of respiratory failure, but due to the administration which drug is unknown. No other physical injuries were found on the body.
