Manipal Surgeons remove 16kg ovarian tumour from 69 year old patient

Manipal: Surgeons at Kasturba Hospital operated on a 69 year old women and removed an ovarian tumour weighing 16 kg with size 35 cm x 40 cm. The surgery was led by Dr Shripad Hebbar with Dr Nita Varghese , Dr Sujatha and Dr Sunanda and the anaesthesia team.

The woman is reported to have been carrying the tumour for a year. Thirty years ago, she had undergone a hysterectomy to remove her uterus but the ovaries were retained. After three months of the surgery she had complaints of loss of appetite and also a feeling of full and bloated even with a little intake.

After examining her condition, the patient was referred to Dr Shripad Hebbar, Professor and Head of a unit of OBG department, Kasturba Medical College and Manipal Hospital where doctors advised her to go for an ultrasound.

The ultrasound reports showed a big mass inside her ovary. Dr Hebbar then advised her for immediate surgery. The surgery is reported to have taken five long hours.

M. Dayananda, Medical Superintendent, Kasturba Hospital, congratulated Dr. Hebbar and his team for successfully performing the complicated surgical procedure. "Availing timely medical assistance and caution was the only way to avoid tumour growing to such large proportion", he said.

The patient is now recovering well and soon she will be able to go back her routine life.
