Kolkata Doctors remove 10000 gall bladder stones from patient

Doctors of Medical College and Hospital (MCH) removed more than 10000 gallbladder stones from a patient on Wednesday. The patient Dr. Rajiv Chaudhary is a Nutritionist by profession and is at present recovering in hospital.

Patient a 40 years old male and a resident of Dumdum cantonment were complaining of right-sided abdominal pain for last about one a half month when he visited OPD of the hospital.

After history taking and examination he was asked to undergo an ultrasound examination. The ultrasonography report revealed that his gallbladder had several stones. He was admitted to hospital on Monday and Laparoscopic cholecystectomy was performed on him on Wednesday. Doctors suspect that the deposition of cholesterol might have been a cause of Stone formation.

According to reports by TOI,“The USG detected the gallstones but we had no idea that the number of stones would be so high. We counted 10,35 stones and stopped as we got tired. This is the second reported case in Kolkata where so many stones were found in the gallbladder. The first one was when Dr. Makhanlal Saha operated upon a patient who had about 12,000 stones, said Dr. Manas Kumar Dutta, assistant professor of surgery whose team conducted the operation under the supervision of department head Dr. Sukumar Maity.

Gallstones occur when there is an imbalance in the chemical constituents of bile that result in precipitation of one or more of the components.

How are the gallbladder stones formed?

Formed due to excessive bile, gallbladder stones take time to form. A study describes, 'Gallstones are usually formed from bile that is in stasis. When bile is not fully emptied from the gallbladder, it can precipitate as sludge and subsequently turn into stones. Biliary obstruction may also lead to gallstones including bile duct strictures and cancers, such as pancreatic cancer.'
