Govt nod to 26 new medical colleges attached to district hospitals, Check out details

New Delhi: The Central Government has given its approval for the establishment of 26 new medical colleges attached to existing district or referral hospitals.

The information to this effect was recently shared in the Lok Sabha session where the Minister of State in Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoS Health), Shri Ashwini Kumar Choubey replied to the questions raised by Gnanathiraviam, Basanta Kumar Panda and Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka.

The minister was asked to furnish the details of the New Medical Colleges allocated under phase III of the centrally sponsored scheme, State/UT wise and the number of colleges allotted to the State of Tamil Nadu under phase I, II, and III, phase-wise.

The Phase-III of the Scheme has been approved by the Cabinet on 28.8.2019 to establish 75 more new medical colleges by 2022-23. The State/UT Governments have been requested to send their proposals under this Scheme along with the Detailed Project Report as per Scheme guidelines for consideration by the Ministry. As on date, 26 medical colleges have been approved. Details are as follows:

On the latter, it was informed that the State of Tamil Nadu was not covered in Phase I & II. In Phase-III, six medical colleges in Tamil Nadu have been approved till date.

On other specific questions asking whether the government has received the proposals for new medical colleges in Rayagada and Kalahandi, Odisha under Phase-III. the minister replied in negative.
